L'aspetto attuale del piazzale risale però agli anni '30: fino a quel momento, infatti, Colonne e Basilica erano separate da un isolato di abitazioni popolari, che venne abbattuto per restituire maggiore respiro al complesso. Nel piazzale vennero posati anche i binari del tram, poi spostati negli anni '90 oltre le Colonne.
