When Sir Bazalgette designed his sewage system over 150 years ago the population of London was about 4 million, today it is about 8 million. While it is in a perfect working condition, it can't cope with the amount of sewage. Even 2 mm of rainfall can trigger a discharge of untreated sewage into tidal Thames.

My purpose was the lectures - absolutely excellent - about the history of sewage management and the develop of London sewers under the control of Bazalgette. We then enjoyed an excellent, well-explained and very relaxed tour of the Pumping Station itself, followed by the primary purpose of my visit, the walk-through tour of the sewers.
