Elder Fashioned Copy; Elder Fashioned. 1 sli Orange. 1 Maraschino cherry. 2 oz Bourbon. 1⁄2 oz Elderflower liqueur, St. Germain. 1⁄4 oz Lemon juice. 2 ds Bitters, Angostura. Instructions. Muddle orange and cherry in old fashioned glass. Add bourbon, St. Germain, lemon, bitters. Stir, top with additional ice.

So here I found myself staring at two completely different bottles both containing the goods of the elderflower, one a cordial without alcohol, the other a 20 proof liqueur. A side-by-side pour showed the Ballymaloe cordial to be thick like molasses and much clearer in color than the golden tinged St. Germain, whose body was much less viscous.

Add simple syrup and bitters to a rocks glass. Fill the glass with ice and stir to combine. (My favorite stirrer for a single cocktail? This cake tester !) Add whiskey, stir, and garnish: Add the bourbon or rye and stir for about 30 seconds to chill and dilute. Garnish with orange peel or Luxardo cherry, if desired.

Phil Ward of Death & Co, New York City created his Elder-Fashioned with Plymouth gin in 2007 and Simon Difford used bourbon whiskey whilst at The Cabinet Room in London the year prior. Both recipes were published shortly after St-Germain first.
