A $100,000 grant through the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE)'s Office of the Great Lakes will help protect wild rice, one of the state's most culturally and ecologically significant native plants. The two-year grant from the Michigan Great Lakes Protection Fund to the University of Michigan Water Center will support the collaborative creation of a wild rice.

The Michigan Wild Rice Initiative (MWRI) stems from a collective understanding among State and Tribal governments that the protection and restoration of wild rice in Michigan should be elevated in importance.
